Belarus: Opposition Figure Jailed, Beaten
The court of Maskouski district of Minsk has found a political scientist, an opposition activist Ales Lahvinets guilty of petty hooliganism. Allegedly he had used foul speech
The verdict is 10 days of arrest.
Lahvinets was detained on March 23 in the yard of his house. He was brutally beaten up, and he was taken to a hospital. During the trial riot policemen said that Lahvinets himself banged his head against seats in the car.
“We are deeply concerned about Ales Lahvinets’ safety,” said Yulia Gorbunova, Belarus researcher at Human Rights Watch. “The false charges and beating are completely outrageous and sadly emblematic of the latest vicious government crackdown in Belarus.”
